What a day really costs
The UAE spans the full range from shoestring to stratospheric, often within the same neighbourhood. A budget traveller moving by metro, eating at Pakistani and Filipino cafeterias, sleeping in hostels or Deira budget hotels, and prioritising free attractions (beaches, souks, the Creek, Al Fahidi) lands around AED 250–350 per day. A comfortable mid-range trip — a solid 4-star hotel, mixed restaurant meals, a paid attraction most days and the odd taxi — runs AED 500–700 daily. Luxury starts around AED 1,500 a day and has no ceiling: helicopter tours, yachts and fine dining stack fast.
The single biggest lever is accommodation, which swings harder here than almost anywhere: the same week in a hostel dorm versus a Palm resort differs by a factor of twenty. The second lever is alcohol, which costs roughly double European prices at licensed venues. Everything else — metro fares, street food, attraction tickets — is moderate by global-city standards.
Where the money goes
A mid-range day splits roughly into thirds: a third on the hotel, a third on food and drink, and a third on transport plus activities. Travellers consistently underestimate food (restaurant mains run AED 60–120, and delivery-app convenience adds up) and overestimate transport (the metro caps daily spend, and most tourist corridors are cheap by taxi). Attractions are the controllable variable: observation decks, theme parks and desert safaris each run AED 150–350, so two paid activities a day doubles the daily burn versus one.
Combo tickets and bundled tours genuinely save 15–25% versus booking separately — our Combo Deals roundups track the current offers. And the cheapest upgrade in the country is timing: identical hotels cost 30–50% less in July than in January.
Budget rules that work
- Stay in Deira, Bur Dubai, Al Barsha or Sharjah to halve accommodation costs versus the Marina or Downtown.
- Eat where office workers eat: cafeteria lunches under AED 30, shawarma under AED 15.
- Buy one combo or bundle per trip instead of separate tickets for safaris, cruises and parks.
- Use the metro as default; save taxis for late nights and group splits (four people often beat four metro fares).
- Travel April–May or October for the sweet spot of decent weather and sane prices.
❓ Common questions
Is Dubai expensive?
It can be either. A careful traveller spends less per day than in London or Paris; an indulgent one spends more than almost anywhere. The range is the point.
How much cash should I carry?
Very little — cards work nearly everywhere. Keep AED 100–200 for abras, souks and tips.
Are theme parks worth the price?
The big ones (Ferrari World, Atlantis Aquaventure, Dubai Parks) justify a full day each at AED 300+. Go at opening to extract full value.
Can I do Dubai under AED 500 for 3 days?
Yes with discipline: hostel dorms, metro only, free attractions and cafeteria food. See our dedicated budget itinerary.
Should I book activities in advance?
Yes for the big-ticket items — desert safaris, theme parks and observation decks cost the same early but sell out peak slots. Walking tours and souks need no booking at all.
