Emergency Numbers

Police 999, Ambulance 998, Fire 997, Coast Guard 996. Tourist police and nearest hospital by area.

Save these before anything else

Memorise four numbers on arrival day: 999 for police, 998 for ambulance, 997 for fire and civil defence, 996 for coast guard. Operators speak English and Arabic, location tracking works when you call from a local SIM, and response times in the cities are excellent. Save them as phone contacts the way you would a hotel address — the moment you need them is the worst moment to be searching.

Beyond the big four: 800-4444 reaches Dubai Tourist Police (multilingual, visitor-focused, handles everything from lost passports to disputes), 800-11111 is the general government helpline, and your embassy consular line covers arrests, hospitalisations and lost travel documents. Photograph your passport, visa and insurance card into your phone on day one so every number you call gets accurate details fast.

What to do when it happens

Medical emergency: call 998 first, then the hotel front desk (they know the nearest facility and will send staff to meet paramedics). Private hospitals — Mediclinic, NMC, Aster — take walk-in emergencies around the clock; public Rashid Hospital in Dubai anchors trauma care. Keep your insurance policy number in your phone, not just in email, because hospitals ask at registration.

Crime, theft or dispute: call 999 for anything urgent, 901 for non-urgent police matters, and the tourist police for visitor-specific help including translation. Road accident: move to safety, call 999, photograph everything, and never admit fault at the scene — exchange details and let insurers and reports sort liability. Fire: 997, evacuate by stairs, never lifts.

Embassies, insurance and documents

Consular assistance covers arrests, hospitalisation, deaths, lost passports and emergency loans for repatriation — save your embassy number alongside the local emergency ones, and note that consulates cannot pay bills, override local law or spring anyone from detention. What they do brilliantly is navigate systems: hospital liaisons, lawyer lists, family contact and replacement travel documents, usually within a day.

The document habit that underpins all of it: passport, visa, insurance policy and hotel confirmation photographed into your phone and emailed to yourself, plus one paper copy split from the originals. Travellers who do this resolve every admin emergency in minutes; those who do not spend the crisis reconstructing identity first.

  • Travel insurance with evacuation cover bought before departure.

❓ Common questions

Do operators speak English?

Yes — emergency lines are bilingual English/Arabic with translation support beyond that.

Which hospital will take me?

Any private hospital emergency department takes walk-ins; insurance details sort out at registration, treatment first.

What if I witness an accident?

Call 999, do not move injured people unless in danger, and do not film the scene — filming emergencies is itself an offence.

Is 999 only for crime?

It is the all-purpose police emergency line: crime, accidents, urgent disputes. Use 901 for non-urgent police business.

How do I reach tourist police?

Dubai Tourist Police on 800-4444 — multilingual officers specialising in visitor issues from scams to lost documents.
