Bus & Tram
RTA buses for budget travel, Dubai Tram (Marina–JBR), Palm Monorail, and intercity buses E100/E101 to Abu Dhabi.
Buses: the budget backbone
Dubai buses go where the metro does not: Jumeirah beach road, Al Barsha backstreets, Festival City, and the far ends of the Marina. Fares run AED 3–7.50 on the same Nol card with free metro-to-bus transfers inside the time window, which makes bus-plus-metro the cheapest way to move in the country. Buses are air-conditioned, punctual by posted schedules at major stops, and covered by the RTA app with live tracking — the only real cost is time, as cross-town routes can take twice the metro.
For emirate-hopping, the intercity coaches are outstanding value: E100/E101 from Ibn Battuta or Al Ghubaiba to Abu Dhabi (about AED 25, every 20–30 minutes), plus services to Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah and Al Ain. They are comfortable, cold, and far cheaper than any transfer — the trade-off is fixed stations at each end plus a local taxi onward.
Tram, monorail and the last mile
The Dubai Tram loops the Marina–JBR–Palm Gateway corridor, interchanging with the metro at Sobha Realty (DMCC) and JLT. It exists for one job — gliding along the tram-only track past the Marina towers — and does it well, with Gold cabins and women-and-children cabins mirroring metro rules. The Palm Monorail continues from Palm Gateway down the trunk to Atlantis; note it needs its own ticket top-up rather than standard Nol credit, a quirk that catches visitors at the gate.
Together, metro-plus-tram-plus-monorail covers Downtown-to-Atlantis without a car: metro to Sobha Realty, tram toward JBR, monorail down the Palm. It is slower than a taxi and infinitely more scenic — ride it once for the views even if you taxi the rest of the week.
Riding right
- One Nol card covers metro, bus, tram and water bus — tap in and out on every leg.
- Women-and-children and Gold cabins exist on trams exactly as on the metro.
- No eating or drinking on board; fines match metro levels.
- Intercity buses need no booking — arrive 10 minutes early at the station bay.
- Palm Monorail requires a separate ticket balance; top up before the gates.
❓ Common questions
How do I get to Abu Dhabi cheaply?
E100/E101 intercity bus, about AED 25 from Ibn Battuta or Al Ghubaiba, roughly 2 hours. Taxis cost 10x.
Does the tram reach the Palm?
The tram reaches Palm Gateway; transfer to the Palm Monorail for the trunk and Atlantis.
Are night buses a thing?
Limited. After midnight the network thins drastically — plan taxis or Careem for late returns.
Can I pay cash on buses?
No — Nol only. Keep the card topped up; drivers cannot sell tickets.
Do buses run during Ramadan?
Yes, with adjusted frequencies and peak-hour shifts around iftar. Check the RTA app for the current timetable — routes near mosques get busy at prayer times.
Are buses accessible for wheelchairs?
Yes — the fleet is low-floor with ramps, and drivers assist boarding throughout the journey. The metro remains easier, but buses are fully usable across both cities every single day.
