147,000 date palms and 3,000-year-old irrigation — the UAE's first World Heritage Site
The most beautiful fort in the UAE — and the Thesiger galleries inside it
Al Jahili is the beauty queen of Emirati forts: an 1890s mud-brick complex with a famous four-tiered round tower, built for the ruling family and restored to award standards — its crenellations against a blue sky being possibly the most photographed heritage image in the country.
Inside, the permanent Wilfred Thesiger exhibition shows the great explorer's photographs of his 1940s Empty Quarter crossings with Bedouin companions — haunting, intimate images taken decades before the towers rose. Entry to all of it: free.
