Jebel Harim
The Mountain of Women — fossils at 2,000 metres and rock art on the way
A hidden valley beyond the passes — acacia meadows and stone villages
Past Jebel Harim the road tips over a pass and drops into the Rawdah Bowl — a broad hanging valley of acacia parkland, grazing goats, old stone-and-thatch Shihuh houses and ancient graveyards, walled on all sides by mountains: Arabia doing an impression of an alpine meadow.
It's the far point of the classic mountain safari and feels it — picnic under an acacia, wander the deserted seasonal hamlets, and register that the nearest traffic light might be in another country. The drive in ("terrifying" is the traditional adjective) is half the story.
