Heart of Sharjah
The Gulf's largest heritage restoration — a whole historic quarter brought back to life
The oldest souk in the UAE — coral columns, antiques and a legendary coffeehouse
Souq Al Arsah has traded continuously for some two centuries — caravans and pearl merchants once met in this same courtyard — making it the oldest surviving souk in the country. Its restored arcade of coral-stone columns and palm-trunk beams now shelters antique dealers, silver and bead sellers, oud shops and craft stalls.
The stock rewards rummaging: Omani silver, old dhow fittings, Bedouin jewellery, pearls, daggers and gloriously untidy shelves of maybe-antiques. Prices negotiate gently; stories come free.
The traditional coffeehouse at its heart is the real institution — gahwa, chai and a plate of dates in the same spot traders have taken them for generations.
