Visa Extension

Extending 30 to 60 days, costs and process, overstay fines (AED 100/day after 10-day grace), and the visa-run option.

Extending without leaving

Holiday plans change, and the UAE system accommodates that: tourist visas can be extended from inside the country, typically twice, without any border run. The extension is processed through the same channels as the original visa — your airline sponsor, a travel agency, or the ICP/GDRFA portals — and usually completes within 24 to 48 hours. Costs run to a few hundred dirhams including service charges, which is why travellers who suspect they will stay longer are better off buying the longer visa before flying in the first place.

Start the extension at least a week before expiry. Processing is fast when everything is routine, but a rejected scan or a public holiday can eat days you do not have. Your passport must still have validity remaining, and you must apply while your current visa is still valid — expired visas cannot be extended, only fined and exited.

Overstay fines: the real numbers

Overstaying is the most expensive mistake a UAE visitor can make. After a 10-day grace period, fines accrue at AED 100 per day of overstay, and they must be paid in full at departure — immigration will simply not let you board until the balance is settled, and card machines at the airport do accept payment. An unplanned extra week therefore costs around AED 700 plus considerable stress.

There is no negotiation at the counter and no meaningful appeal for ordinary overstays. Set a phone reminder for five days before expiry, and if an extension is refused, leave on time and re-enter on a fresh visa rather than drifting into fines.

The visa-run option

The classic alternative to an in-country extension is the visa run: exit the UAE (usually to Oman by road via Hatta, or by a short flight) and re-enter on a new visa or a fresh visa-on-arrival entry. Same-day turnaround agencies run this as a packaged service from Dubai and Sharjah, handling the exit, the new application and the re-entry for a flat fee.

Visa runs are legitimate when done through proper channels with a genuine new visa, but back-to-back runs attract scrutiny — officers can and do refuse entry to travellers who appear to be living in the country on serial tourist visas. One run is routine; a lifestyle of runs is a gamble.

❓ Common questions

How many times can I extend?

Tourist visas can generally be extended twice for 30 days each from inside the country. Rules shift, so confirm the current limit with an agency before counting on a second extension.

What happens if I overstay by one day?

You fall inside the 10-day grace period, so no fine for a single day — but do not make a habit of it, and never board a flight assuming the grace applies without checking current rules.

Can I extend a visa-on-arrival entry?

Yes, visa-on-arrival entries can be extended in-country through the standard process.

Is the Oman border run still possible?

Yes, the Hatta–Oman crossing remains the standard road route, and dedicated visa-run buses depart Dubai daily. Bring your passport, exit fee in cash, and patience for the border queues.

Visa rules change often and depend on nationality. Always confirm entry requirements with UAE authorities or your airline before booking.
