Visa FAQ
Unmarried couples can share rooms (yes, since 2020). Working on a tourist visa (no). Driving with an international license (yes). No current vaccine or COVID rules.
The questions everyone asks
UAE visa rules generate the same handful of questions from nearly every first-time visitor, usually driven by outdated forum posts. The short version: the system is far more visitor-friendly than its reputation suggests, most rules were liberalised years ago, and the remaining hard lines are clearly signposted. The answers below reflect the current position — for anything involving employment, residency or unusual passports, confirm with ICP, GDRFA or your airline within a month of travel.
❓ Common questions
Can unmarried couples share a hotel room?
Yes. Since the 2020 legal reforms, unmarried couples can legally share accommodation throughout the UAE, and hotels ask no questions. This applies in every emirate including Sharjah.
Can I work while visiting on a tourist visa?
No — not for a UAE employer, not even briefly. Remote work for a foreign employer during a short trip is tolerated in practice, but local employment on a visit visa is illegal for both you and the employer. Longer remote-work stays have their own one-year virtual working visa.
Can I drive on my licence?
Visitors can drive rental cars with a valid International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Many Western licences are accepted for direct exchange only by residents; as a tourist, carry the IDP to be safe.
Are there vaccine or COVID entry rules?
No current vaccination, testing or quarantine requirements for entry. Rules changed frequently during the pandemic years, so a quick check before flying remains good practice.
How long must my passport be valid?
Six months beyond arrival, enforced by airlines at check-in. This single rule ruins more trips than any visa regulation.
What happens if I overstay?
Fines of AED 100 per day after a 10-day grace period, payable in full before you can depart. See our Visa Extension guide rather than risking it.
Do babies and children need visas?
Yes, every traveller needs an individual visa regardless of age, though children are often exempt from the visa fee itself.
Can GCC residents get visa on arrival?
Residents of GCC states in professional occupations can generally obtain a 30-day entry on arrival, subject to the profession listed on their residency. Confirm with your airline, as enforcement varies.
Do I need travel insurance to enter?
It is not an entry requirement, but it is strongly advised — a single emergency hospital visit without cover can cost more than the entire holiday. Policies covering medical evacuation are worth the small premium for desert and marine activities.
Can I visit Oman or other neighbours mid-trip?
Yes, and it is a popular add-on: Oman by road via Hatta, or short flights across the Gulf. Just make sure your UAE visa is multiple-entry if you plan to come back, and check the neighbour's entry rules separately.
Should I keep my passport on me at all times?
Carry a photo of your passport and visa on your phone, and leave the originals in the hotel safe. Police accept digital copies for routine checks, and this removes any risk of losing documents at the beach or in the desert.
Visa rules change often and depend on nationality. Always confirm entry requirements with UAE authorities or your airline before booking.
