📖 About

Far from any tourist map, the Afghan traders' quarter on Dubai's northeastern edge is the city's most atmospheric hidden market. This is where the Afghan community trades hand-knotted carpets and kilims, dried fruit and nuts by the sack — mulberries, green raisins, pine nuts — plus lapis jewellery, embroidered caps and karakul hats.

The commerce comes with a food scene attached: no-frills Afghan eateries serving kabuli pulao heaped with raisins and carrots, lamb karahi, and fresh naan the size of a car door pulled straight from the tandoor. A full meal costs what a coffee does in the Marina.

Nothing here is curated for visitors, which is exactly the appeal — it's a working market. Come curious and polite, expect friendly surprise that you found it, and leave with a carpet story better than anything from a mall.

⭐ Highlights

  • Hand-knotted Afghan carpets and kilims at trader prices
  • Dried fruit and nuts sold by the sack
  • Kabuli pulao and tandoor naan at local canteens
  • Zero tourists — a genuinely undiscovered corner of Dubai
  • Lapis, embroidery and karakul hats for one-of-a-kind souvenirs

💡 Insider Tips

  • Carpet buying: flip it over — more knots per inch on the back means better quality; bargain hard but respectfully.
  • Bring cash; cards are hit-and-miss in the smaller shops and canteens.
  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing people — this is a residential working area.
  • Friday afternoon is peak atmosphere, but also peak crowds at the eateries — go hungry either way.
