📖 About

On Ajman Creek, shipwrights still build ocean-going wooden dhows the way the Gulf always has — by eye, adze and generational memory, no blueprints — in what's counted among the largest traditional dhow-building yards in the world.

Hulls the size of buildings rise from the mud in ribs of teak and shora wood; some take years, bound for trading routes to India and East Africa or for racing fleets of the ruling families. The craftsmen — many from families who've done nothing else for a century — generally welcome curious, polite visitors between tasks.

It's the realest maritime-heritage experience in the Emirates: not a museum of the trade, but the trade — free, unstaged, and slowly vanishing. Go before it does.

⭐ Highlights

  • Ocean-going dhows built by hand, no blueprints
  • Among the world's last major traditional yards
  • Teak hulls the size of buildings, up close
  • Craftsmen from generational shipwright families
  • Free and completely unstaged

💡 Insider Tips

  • It's a workplace: ask before photographing people, mind the timber and tools.
  • Mornings have the most activity; Fridays go quiet.
  • Closed shoes — the yard floor is wood shavings, nails and mud.
  • Pair with the fish market and museum for Ajman's heritage morning.
