An 18th-century fort that ruled the emirate until 1970 — now its memory keeper
Ajman's fort is the emirate compressed into one building: built in the late 1700s of coral stone and gypsum, it served as the ruler's residence and seat of government until 1970, then briefly as the police station — history so recent that photographs of the last royal residents hang in rooms they lived in.
The museum inside is old-school in the best way: wind towers you can stand beneath, a re-created souk street, pearling and fishing displays, traditional weaponry, and the memorably eccentric police-and-punishments wing.
It faces the old town square where Ajman's traditional souk still trades — fort, souk and corniche together make a compact, genuinely charming heritage afternoon that most UAE visitors never think to take.
