Bastakiya Hidden Courtyards
Behind the tourist lane: silent courtyards, rooftop majlis and doors worth pushing
Unlisted rooftop terraces above the wind towers — karak with a creek view
Several of Al Fahidi's heritage-house cafés and cultural venues keep quiet rooftop terraces that never make the guidebooks — climb the right staircase and you're above the wind-tower skyline, with the creek glinting beyond the rooftops and the call to prayer rolling across the quarter at dusk.
The game is gentle exploration: ask "is the roof open?" wherever you stop for karak or Arabic coffee. XVA's upper levels, cultural foundation terraces and a rotating cast of small cafés oblige — each roof a slightly different composition of towers, minarets and laundry lines.
It costs the price of a tea, and it delivers what no observation deck can: old Dubai at eye level, at the hour it's most itself.
