Ajman Inland Desert
The unexplored sands between coast and mountains — dunes without a single flag
Friday-morning camel racing with robot jockeys — free and gloriously local
Al Tallah is one of the country's liveliest traditional camel tracks: winter Friday mornings bring race meets where camels thunder down the rail ridden by tiny robot jockeys, urged on by owners' 4x4s racing the service road alongside — walkie-talkies crackling, dust rising, honour at stake.
It's free, unticketed and utterly untouristed. Wander the paddocks where racers are rubbed down and blanketed, accept the coffee that will inevitably be offered, and watch a sport that predates the country by centuries run on 21st-century robotics.
Off race days, training sessions most cool mornings offer the same spectacle at half the volume.
