Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
One of the world's most beautiful buildings — 82 domes of white marble, free to all
A lovingly restored 1950s house museum — Emirati domestic life, told room by room
Built in 1958 for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa of the ruling family, this house captures the exact hinge of Emirati history — the moment traditional mud-brick architecture met modern comforts, just before oil changed everything. Its restoration won awards for honouring both.
Rooms are kept as domestic history: majlis spaces for men's and women's gatherings, family quarters, courtyards engineered for shade and breeze — annotated with recollections from people who lived this era. A gentle, human-scale counterpoint to the region's grand forts.
A courtyard café and community programme keep it alive rather than embalmed. Technically in Al Ain (Abu Dhabi emirate's garden city), it's the connoisseur's stop on any Al Ain day trip — and almost nobody goes.
