📖 About

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE's masterpiece: 82 domes, more than a thousand columns inlaid with mother-of-pearl flowers, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (weighing 35 tonnes), and chandeliers of Swarovski crystal hanging above a prayer hall that holds thousands. It was envisioned by the nation's founder, Sheikh Zayed, who rests in a mausoleum on the site.

Unusually for a working mosque of this stature, it is fully open to visitors of every faith — free, with excellent free guided tours that explain the architecture and the faith with equal warmth. The reflective pools around the courtyard are engineered so the arcades mirror perfectly at dusk.

It is the single most visited attraction in the UAE and the reason many travellers make the Abu Dhabi trip at all. Go at the golden hour, stay for the lighting system that follows the phases of the moon, and give it more time than you think you need.
