Wind towers, coral-stone lanes and courtyard cafés — the Dubai that came first
The city's oldest building — a 1787 fort holding Dubai's origin story
Al Fahidi Fort is the oldest building in Dubai — raised in 1787 from coral stone and gypsum to guard the creek settlement, then serving as ruler's residence, garrison and jail before becoming the city's museum in 1971, the year the UAE was born.
The classic museum experience leads through the fort's courtyard (dhows, cannons, a barasti palm-frond house) and down into atmospheric dioramas of pre-oil Dubai: souk life, pearl diving, desert nights — kitschy in the best way and genuinely informative about how fast everything changed.
Note that the museum has been undergoing long-running renovation works as Dubai upgrades its heritage offerings, so check what's open before you build plans around it; the fort exterior and the surrounding heritage quarter reward the walk regardless.
