Liwa Oasis & Empty Quarter
The edge of the Rub' Al Khali — the greatest sand desert on Earth begins here
A 300-metre wall of sand — the UAE's tallest dune, terrifying and beautiful
Moreeb ("terrifying" in the local dialect) earns the name: a near-50-degree face of sand rising roughly 300 metres from the flat sabkha — among the tallest dunes on Earth, and the UAE's most dramatic single sand formation. A paved road delivers you, absurdly, straight to its base.
It's the country's motorsport altar: winter festivals send drag-built 4x4s and bikes screaming up the face in hill-climb competitions watched by thousands. Outside events, you'll share the base with a handful of dune-bashers and photographers — and climbers attempting the leg-destroying walk up the ridge line.
The summit view — Empty Quarter to every horizon — is worth every sliding step of the 45-minute climb. Descend by leaping down the soft face; it's the closest adults get to being eight again.
